Khamenei Defends Strikes as ‘Lawful Retaliation’

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, described Iran’s missile strikes on Israel as “justified and lawful” during a rare public appearance in Tehran on Friday. Speaking to tens of thousands, he referred to the attack as the “minimum response” to Israel’s actions, which he labeled as “astonishing crimes.”

Retaliation for Nasrallah’s Assassination

Khamenei’s address came after Iran launched nearly 200 missiles at Israel, following the assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. The supreme leader, speaking partially in Arabic to connect with Palestinian and Lebanese allies, praised both Hezbollah and Hamas for their roles in the resistance against Israel.

Strengthening Iran’s ‘Axis of Resistance’

Iran has long supported armed groups across the Middle East, including Hezbollah and Hamas, dubbing these alliances the “Axis of Resistance.” Khamenei emphasized that these groups would not back down in their fight against Israel.

Public Show of Power

Khamenei’s rare appearance underscored the significance of the moment for Iran, as the regime navigates both regional tensions and internal unrest. His leadership in Friday prayers, something he hadn’t done since 2020, seemed aimed at demonstrating strength and reaffirming Iran’s role as a leader in the regional conflict.

Iran’s Willingness to Strike Again

In his speech, Khamenei made it clear that Iran is prepared to retaliate further if Israel responds to the missile strikes. He vowed that if needed, Iran would launch another attack in the future.
