Muizzu’s First Bilateral Visit to India

Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu will visit India from October 6-10, marking his first official bilateral visit since taking office. This visit aims to boost ties with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, signaling a reset in India-Maldives relations after recent tensions. Although Muizzu attended Modi’s swearing-in in June, this trip holds special significance for both nations.

Diplomatic Reset After Tensions

Muizzu, elected in 2023 on an ‘India Out’ campaign, had previously sought to reduce Maldives’ reliance on India, calling for the removal of Indian military personnel. This stance strained relations, but recent diplomatic efforts, including high-level visits by Indian and Maldivian officials, have signaled a warming of ties.

Strengthening Cooperation and Ties

India views the Maldives as a key maritime neighbor and part of its ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy. Muizzu’s visit follows India’s financial support to help the Maldives avoid a debt default and reflects both nations’ commitment to strengthening cooperation. According to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, the visit will focus on deepening bilateral, regional, and international collaboration.

Muizzu’s Evolving Stance on India

Despite his initial pro-China stance, Muizzu has softened his rhetoric against India. During a recent visit to the U.S., he clarified that Maldives’ issue was with foreign military presence, not specifically with India. He also took action against Maldivian officials who made derogatory remarks about Modi, demonstrating his intent to maintain respectful relations.

Key Meetings and Engagements

Muizzu will meet with Prime Minister Modi and President Droupadi Murmu to discuss key regional issues. He will also visit Mumbai and Bengaluru for business events and interact with the Maldivian diaspora in Bengaluru. The visit aims to solidify economic and diplomatic cooperation between the two nations.
